Partners for thedevelopment of the concept were automotive supplier HELLA and thedistinguished Umeå Institute of Design in Sweden.
Leverkusen, March 23, 2017. Mobility is a basic human needand a key to the sustainability of our society and economy. Thedemands imposed on the individuality, safety, environmentalcompatibility and efficiency of motor vehicles therefore are veryhigh. To meet them, Covestro is developing innovative andsustainable material solutions that push previous technicalboundaries. The company is presenting a new concept in electric cardesign at this year's VDI Plastics in Automotive Engineeringconference on March 29 and 30, 2017, in Mannheim, Germany.
“Based on pioneering plastics technologies, the conceptincorporates current trends in the automotive design,” says projectmanager Jochen Hardt. “It enables us to give vehicle designers newpossibilities for designing comfortable, functional andenergy-efficient cars.” Partners for the development of the conceptwere automotive supplier HELLA and the distinguished Umeå Instituteof Design in Sweden. At the VDI congress, this visionary conceptwill be on display in the bbbb of a lifestyle electric car.
Cockpit with unobstructed sightlinesThe concept car is the first vehicle with wrap-around glazingmade of transparent polycarbonate. The glazing is lightweight andaerodynamic, two features that reduce energy consumption. Thedesigners also implemented entirely new styling options that wouldnot have been feasible in glass.
One example is the seamless design that integrates thetransparent A-pillars. Wrap-around glazing rewards passengers witha panorama view, and enhances pedestrian safety because it almostentirely eliminates blind spots. The glazing meets all therequirements of the new UN Regulation R43.
New lighting concept revolutionizes design and safetyCovestro and HELLA have redefined automotive lighting. Visitorsto the VDI congress can experience live just how light and lightingeffects become styling elements. Illuminated surfaces withintegrated LED spots make light an adaptive design element thatlends a car personality. Automotive designers now have access tofascinating possibilities for styling the front- and back-ends, andenhancing safety, energy efficiency and functionality.
Holography will likely prove to be a top technology in futureautomotive lighting. HELLA and Covestro have developed aninnovative solution based on holographic films from the Bayfol® HXrange. It enables various lighting functions to be integrated intobody components, requiring little space and opening up entirely newpossibilities for using light as a design element.

Greater safety for self-driving carsThe new car concept is also geared to future technologies, suchas the autonomous car. New polycarbonate materials enable goodtransmission of LiDAR signals and the homogeneous integration ofsensors, i.e. the “eyes” of an autonomous vehicle, to enhance thesafety of passengers and pedestrians.
Integrated displays in body parts also serve this goal. Inautonomous vehicles, they support direct communication from car tocar or car to pedestrian, e.g. via visual signals indicating thatthe car will stop in front of a pedestrian crossing.

To explain the various aspects of film development, Covestro hasdeveloped a display and surface demonstrator that will also be onexhibit at the industry event in Mannheim.
